Government to repurpose part of forest and pasture lands for food production

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has criticized the underutilization of Uzbekistan’s vast forest and pasture lands and ordered that part of these areas be repurposed to grow food and increase agricultural output.

According to the presidential press service, the head of state pointed out that 16 million hectares of pastures and 12 million hectares of forest land are not being used effectively, despite their importance as strategic reserves for strengthening the country’s food security.

It was noted that in 16 districts, Agrostar companies have already been established and allocated 300 billion UZS to implement modern agricultural technologies for growing, storing, and processing fruits and vegetables, as well as expanding exports. Additionally, banks have begun providing these companies with financial resources of up to $10 million each.

However, the president remarked that in five of those districts, fruit and vegetable exports have not increased – in fact, they have even declined compared to the previous year. “If all resources have been provided, then when will Agrostar start delivering results?” Mirziyoyev asked.

District governors were instructed to boost food production and exports. At the same time, it was emphasized that a significant portion of district lands are pastures and forests managed by national agencies, meaning local governors cannot utilize them for agricultural purposes without special authorization.

“With such resources at our disposal, we could fully meet domestic demand for meat and even begin exporting it,” the president said.

The Prime Minister has been tasked with overseeing this issue. Within a month, the government must assess how much forest and pasture land can be transferred to the public for food and fodder production. These lands are to be offered through public auctions. The president also ordered that farmers and livestock breeders receiving these lands must be provided with sufficient working capital.
