Andijan region launches $140M waste-to-energy facility construction

A new waste incineration plant currently under construction in Andijan region is expected to process 1,500 tons of waste daily and generate 240 million kWh of electricity annually. The $140 million project is being implemented by a Chinese company and will take approximately 18 months to complete.

According to the press service of the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development, construction of the plant began on July 7 in the Khodjaobod district of Andijan region. The facility will convert municipal solid waste into electricity.

The project, valued at $140 million, will process 1,500 tons of waste per day, with an annual electricity output of 240 million kilowatt-hours.

The plant is scheduled for completion by 2028 and is expected to create 100 new jobs. It is being built in partnership with China’s CAMC Engineering, with which a memorandum of understanding was signed in 2024.

“These types of projects are crucial for improving the environmental situation in the regions, producing clean energy, reducing landfill volumes, and limiting harmful emissions into the atmosphere,” the agency noted in its statement.

As previously reported, waste-to-energy plants are planned for six regions across Uzbekistan. These initiatives are being carried out by three Chinese companies in the regions of Tashkent, Samarkand, Kashkadarya, and the Fergana Valley, with total investments estimated at around $1 billion.
