As it was earlier reported, on 8 August President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was briefed on measures to ensure the stability of Tashkent’s energy system.
In an interview with Uzbekistan 24, Azim Akhmedkhadjayev, Uzatom director, said the president had issued instructions on the large nuclear power plant construction project during the meeting.
“We have signed an agreement with Rosatom on the large nuclear power plant construction project and, based on this, are conducting comprehensive studies. We are exploring all possibilities for integrating the large plant into the energy system and will strive to implement the project in the shortest possible time,” the Uzatom head stated.
On 20 June, Uzatom and Russia’s state corporation Rosatom signed an agreement to study the construction of a high-capacity nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.
The document outlines the basic terms for a potential project to build two VVER-1000 reactor units, with the option to expand to four units. Rosatom director general Alexey Likhachev noted that advancing the large nuclear power plant project requires addressing “several issues.”
