Five Uzbek nationals detained in Egypt for violating residency rules

In recent days, Egyptian law enforcement agencies have been actively conducting inspections to ensure that foreign nationals, particularly those who have arrived for educational purposes, are complying with residency and stay requirements.

Representatives from the Uzbek embassy have visited and held discussions at police departments in Cairo’s Nasr City district. As of May 13, it was confirmed that five Uzbek citizens, among other foreign nationals, had been detained for breaching Egypt’s residency rules.

One of the detained individuals has since been released from the temporary holding facility after presenting the necessary documents. The remaining cases are currently under legal review in accordance with local laws, and decisions will be made following the due process.

The embassy advises all Uzbek nationals in Egypt to immediately report any detentions during such inspections so that prompt legal assistance can be provided.

In light of these developments, citizens are urged to strictly adhere to local residency regulations. They should always carry valid identification documents, such as residence permits (iqama) or student IDs issued by universities or institutions, when moving about the country.

The Migration Agency has also reminded the public that, under Uzbekistan’s international agreements, individuals readmitted from abroad for legal violations will not be eligible for biometric passports for a period of two years. This measure was outlined in a government decree issued on May 13 regarding additional steps to improve labor migration processes.

Moreover, in cases involving organized labor migration, failure to comply with contract terms may result in fines and financial liability extended to third-party guarantors, as stipulated in the service agreement.
