Uzbekistan joins FAO Council for 2028–2029, gains voice in global food security

For the first time, Uzbekistan has been elected to the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations for the term 2028–2029, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The election took place on July 4 at FAO headquarters in Rome.

The FAO Council consists of 49 member states, elected for terms of up to three years, with consideration given to geographical representation. The council plays a key role in discussing the organization's budget and programs, and it adopts important decisions and recommendations made by the FAO Conference.

“This membership provides Uzbekistan with a valuable platform to participate in shaping global agricultural and food policies, drafting international regulations and standards, advancing national and regional initiatives, promoting strategic projects, and attracting additional financial resources to support development,” the Foreign Ministry noted.

The FAO is a specialized UN agency that coordinates international efforts to combat hunger. The organization has 195 members, including 194 countries and the European Union, and operates in more than 130 countries.

FAO has maintained a representation office in Uzbekistan since 2014.
